Electronics & Specialized Technical Assessment

When relevant to a project, consulting may also include evaluation and guidance involving electronic components, embedded systems, computer hardware, and other specialized technology.

Certain highly specialized electronic repairs, component-level work, fabrication, installations, programming, data entry, or other labor-intensive implementation services may be performed by qualified third parties rather than directly as part of the consulting engagement.

A Consulting-First Approach

Technology Consulting is fundamentally about solving problems, not selling products.

A successful solution does not necessarily require the newest equipment, the most expensive software, or a custom-built system. In many cases, the best solution is identifying an existing technology that already meets the client’s needs at a reasonable cost.

For this reason, each engagement begins by understanding the objective before recommending the technology.

Depending on the project, my role may range from direct technical assistance to analysis, planning, system design, vendor selection, project coordination, implementation supervision, and long-term technology strategy.

Professional Fees & Project Quotations

Technology Consulting services vary significantly in scope, complexity, responsibility, and the level of specialization required. For this reason, professional fees are determined according to the nature of each consultation or project.

Services may range from an individual consultation or technical assessment to the planning, design, evaluation, and coordination of comprehensive technology solutions for homes, businesses, and organizations.

Before work begins, the applicable consulting fee, estimated scope, or project quotation will be communicated to the client.

Depending on the engagement, services may be billed as:

  • An hourly professional consulting fee

  • A fixed fee for a defined consultation or assessment

  • A project-based quotation

  • A recurring consulting or advisory engagement

  • A customized fee structure for projects requiring planning, coordination, supervision, research, or specialized expertise

Consulting vs. Technical Labor

Technology Consulting is a professional advisory service and should not be understood or priced solely as computer repair, installation, programming, data entry, equipment maintenance, or other technical labor.

Professional fees reflect not only the time involved, but also the analysis, experience, technical knowledge, planning, research, responsibility, and professional judgment required to identify and develop an appropriate solution.

When a project requires extensive programming, installation, cabling, data entry, equipment repair, configuration, or other implementation work, these activities may be quoted separately or performed by qualified third-party specialists under an appropriate project structure.

Initial Consultations & Technical Assessments

For individual technology needs, troubleshooting, diagnostics, configuration, or other limited-scope consultations, a professional consulting fee will be provided before the appointment is confirmed.

An initial consultation may also be used to evaluate a larger or more complex requirement. When additional analysis, planning, development, implementation, or coordination is necessary, a separate proposal or quotation may be prepared.

Project-Based Consulting

Complex projects—including systems planning, software selection, technology infrastructure, smart-home planning, database design, workflow optimization, custom software requirements, vendor evaluation, or implementation coordination—are evaluated individually.

Fees for these engagements may consider factors such as:

  • Project scope and complexity

  • Required research and analysis

  • Level of technical specialization

  • Responsibility and decision-making involved

  • Number of systems, locations, users, or stakeholders

  • Coordination with third-party professionals

  • Documentation and planning requirements

  • Implementation and supervision responsibilities

  • Expected project duration

A project quotation or consulting proposal may therefore differ substantially from the fee applicable to an individual technology consultation.

Third-Party Costs

Hardware, replacement parts, software licenses, subscriptions, development services, specialized technicians, installers, contractors, shipping, and other third-party expenses are not included in professional consulting fees unless specifically stated in writing.

Whenever practical, significant external costs will be discussed with the client before they are incurred.

Appointments & On-Site Service

Appointments are scheduled according to availability.

For on-site appointments, consulting time generally begins at the agreed appointment time and includes the time dedicated to diagnosing, configuring, researching, testing, explaining, or otherwise working toward resolution of the client’s request.

Travel outside the regular service area may be subject to an additional fee, which will be communicated in advance.

If an appointment needs to be cancelled or rescheduled, reasonable advance notice is appreciated.

Diagnosis & Resolution

Technology problems can have multiple causes, and some issues may require additional testing, replacement parts, manufacturer assistance, third-party intervention, or specialized services.

Consulting fees compensate for the professional time, knowledge, diagnosis, research, and assistance provided and do not constitute a guarantee that every technical problem can be resolved during a particular appointment.

Whenever possible, available options and likely costs will be discussed before significant additional work is undertaken.

Client Authorization

The client authorizes access to the devices, accounts, software, networks, or services reasonably necessary to perform the requested consulting work.

The client is responsible for ensuring that they have the legal right and appropriate authorization to access any device, account, software, network, or information provided for consultation.

I will never knowingly assist with unauthorized access to another person’s accounts, devices, communications, or private information.

Passwords & Account Access

Whenever possible, clients should personally enter passwords, PINs, authentication codes, and other sensitive credentials.

If temporary access to credentials is necessary to perform a requested service, such information will be treated as confidential and should be changed by the client afterward whenever appropriate.

Clients remain responsible for maintaining control of their passwords, recovery methods, authentication devices, and online accounts.

Data & Backups

Technology work can occasionally involve risks to existing data, particularly when devices are malfunctioning, storage media is damaged, software is corrupted, or operating systems must be repaired or reconfigured.

Clients are encouraged to maintain current backups of important information before any service is performed.

When appropriate, I may recommend creating or verifying a backup before proceeding with work that could affect stored information.

While reasonable care will always be taken, Technology Consulting does not constitute a data-storage or data-preservation service, and the existence or recoverability of data cannot be guaranteed.

Privacy & Confidentiality

Client privacy is taken seriously.

Personal files, communications, account information, business information, photographs, documents, and other private information encountered while providing a service will be treated confidentially and will only be accessed when reasonably necessary to perform the requested work.

Client information will not be intentionally shared with third parties except when authorized by the client, required to provide the requested service, or required by law.

Third-Party Products & Services

Recommendations regarding computers, software, internet providers, cloud services, accessories, applications, or other products are based on professional judgment and the information available at the time.

Third-party products and services are ultimately controlled by their respective manufacturers or providers. Their availability, pricing, compatibility, policies, warranties, performance, and future changes are outside the consultant’s control.

New or Additional Issues

Technology systems are interconnected, and resolving one issue may reveal another pre-existing problem.

A new problem discovered during or after an appointment is not automatically considered part of the original service.

Additional troubleshooting, configuration, installation, follow-up work, or unrelated requests may be treated as a new consulting service and billed accordingly.

Remote Assistance

When appropriate, certain services may be provided remotely.

Remote access will only be established with the client’s knowledge and authorization. The client may terminate the remote session at any time.

Any remote-access software installed specifically for an appointment may be removed after the service unless the client requests otherwise.

Professional Recommendations

Technology Consulting provides professional guidance based on experience, available information, and the circumstances presented by the client.

Clients retain final responsibility for decisions regarding purchases, repairs, replacements, subscriptions, upgrades, data management, security settings, and the continued use of their technology.

Limitation of Responsibility

Every reasonable effort will be made to perform services carefully and professionally.

However, technology may fail for reasons beyond the consultant’s control, including hardware failure, pre-existing damage, corrupted data, malware, manufacturer defects, software updates, third-party service interruptions, obsolete equipment, incompatible software, or actions taken by other users or service providers.

Accordingly, no guarantee is made regarding the continued operation of third-party hardware, software, online services, networks, accounts, or equipment after the consultation has concluded.

Follow-Up Assistance

Questions directly related to work performed during an appointment may be reviewed to determine whether additional service is required.

Additional troubleshooting, configuration changes, new problems, or requests requiring further work may constitute a new consultation and be billed at the applicable consulting rate.

Acceptance of Terms

By scheduling, confirming, or requesting a Technology Consulting appointment or service after being provided access to these Terms & Conditions, the client acknowledges having had the opportunity to review them and agrees to the terms applicable to the requested service.

For project-based consulting, additional proposals, quotations, scopes of work, or written agreements may apply. In the event that project-specific terms are provided, those terms will supplement these general Terms & Conditions.

Questions regarding professional fees, scope of work, or these conditions are always welcome before an appointment or project is confirmed.

Client Responsibility, Subsequent Events & Unforeseen Circumstances

Technology systems, devices, software, networks, data, and online services may be affected by circumstances that occur before, during, or after a consulting engagement and that are outside the consultant’s reasonable control.

Reasonable professional care will always be exercised when providing consulting services. However, the consultant shall not be responsible to the extent permitted by applicable law for failures, damage, changes, interruptions, or losses resulting from circumstances unrelated to, or occurring independently from, the services performed.

These circumstances may include, without limitation:

  • Pre-existing hardware, software, network, configuration, or data problems

  • Hardware failure or deterioration occurring after a consultation

  • Power failures, electrical disturbances, internet outages, or service-provider interruptions

  • Accidental damage, liquid exposure, physical impact, theft, fire, environmental conditions, or improper handling

  • Actions or modifications performed by the client, another user, technician, installer, developer, contractor, manufacturer, or third party

  • Automatic software, operating-system, firmware, security, or cloud-service updates

  • Malware, unauthorized access, compromised accounts, or other security incidents not caused by the consultant

  • Manufacturer defects, product limitations, incompatibilities, discontinued services, or changes made by third-party providers

  • Loss, alteration, corruption, or reorganization of information resulting from pre-existing damage or limitations in the source data or storage media

  • Events or circumstances that could not reasonably have been identified or prevented during the original consultation

Data Recovery & Reconstruction

Data recovery is inherently uncertain.

When information has been deleted, corrupted, damaged, reformatted, reorganized, or recovered from failing storage media, it may not be technically possible to restore the original file names, folder structures, creation dates, modification dates, metadata, organization, or other characteristics of the original information.

A successful recovery of usable data therefore does not necessarily mean that the original organization or metadata can also be reconstructed.

Unless specifically included in the agreed scope of work, subsequent organization, renaming, classification, reconstruction, or verification of recovered information constitutes a separate service.

Client and Third-Party Actions

Once consulting work has been completed, the continued operation of a system may depend on how it is subsequently used, maintained, modified, updated, or operated.

Changes made after completion of the service may affect the performance, security, compatibility, or reliability of the original solution.

Problems arising after a consultation will therefore be evaluated on their own circumstances and should not automatically be assumed to have resulted from previously performed consulting work.

Lawful and Authorized Use

Clients are responsible for ensuring that the technology, information, accounts, intellectual property, systems, content, and services involved in a consulting engagement are lawfully owned, licensed, or authorized for their intended use.

The consultant may rely on information and representations provided by the client regarding ownership, authorization, identity, licensing, and intended use unless circumstances reasonably indicate otherwise.

Technology Consulting services may not knowingly be used to facilitate fraud, impersonation, unauthorized access, intellectual-property infringement, unlawful surveillance, deceptive activities, or any other illegal or unauthorized purpose.

If circumstances arise that reasonably suggest unlawful, fraudulent, deceptive, or unauthorized activity, the consultant reserves the right to refuse, suspend, or terminate the engagement.

No Responsibility for Unauthorized or Unlawful Subsequent Use

The client remains responsible for the manner in which any technology, system, website, software, configuration, recommendation, or other work product is used after delivery or implementation.

The consultant is not responsible for subsequent modifications, representations, content, activities, or uses undertaken by the client or third parties outside the agreed scope of the consulting engagement.

Evaluation of Subsequent Problems

If a problem occurs following a consultation, the consultant may evaluate the circumstances to determine whether it is directly related to the services previously performed.

If the issue results from the original work and falls within the agreed scope, reasonable corrective action may be provided as appropriate.

If the issue is unrelated, results from a subsequent event or third-party action, or requires additional diagnosis or work beyond the original scope, it may be treated as a new consulting service and billed accordingly.
